  • Travel giant Expedia pays as much as $267,000 in base pay, before bonuses and stock awards, according to data the company disclosed when applying for H-1B visas on behalf of foreign workers.
  • We analyzed the data from over 400 approved visa applications to find the highest-paying jobs within Expedia and used job postings to find out more about the positions, including key responsibilities.
  • Notably, the data doesn't reflect total pay packages — the figures don't include stock options, cash bonuses, or other additional forms of compensation.

Travel giant Expedia Group has had a turbulent year.

The company's former CEO and chief financial officer resigned in December, citing disagreements with the board over strategy. Then, the pandemic hit, causing what new CEO Peter Kern called "likely the worst quarter the travel industry has seen in modern history," driving Expedia sales down 82%. Expedia cut 12% of its workforce earlier this year. The company is now valued at some $12.7 billion on the stock market.

An Expedia spokesperson said the company saw bookings start to rebound in May and is seeing anecdotal signs of recovery: Trip searches on Expedia.com have seen an uptick, and its vacation rental subsidiary VBRO had more stays on Labor Day this year than in 2019.

It's unclear how much the pandemic has affected compensation within Expedia, but federal data provides a window into at least some of the highest-paid roles within the company.

American companies have to disclose salaries when they apply for visas on behalf of current or prospective foreign workers. The Office of Foreign Labor Certification publishes the salaries every year. Business Insider analyzed the data to find the highest-paying roles within Expedia.

We analyzed Expedia's more than 400 active foreign-worker visas in 2020 to find the titles with the highest salaries and provided a salary range for each role (the data doesn't include total compensation, which can include bonuses or stock awards). We focused this list on roles that pay $200,000 or more at the high end of the range. The highest we found pays $267,000.

It's not a comprehensive look because it contains only salaries for foreign workers, but it provides a rare look — most companies doesn't disclose or discuss employee compensation, except for public companies required to report compensation for top executives.
